How to Get
an Updated List of RPI/STS Dissertations
Since the maintenance of dissertation lists by the department is
generally treated as an ancillary task, while for RPI's Folsom Library
it's really a more central task, it makes sense to rely on the latter.
Their lists will be 12-18 months behind what has actually
been deposited (the gears turn slowly), but they're still likely to be
more accurate and up-to-date than anyone else's. More
significantly, since this solution relies on an online catalog, not
only are the resulting lists themselves available online, but links to
PDF versions of individual dissertations (when available) are
incorporated into the list, significantly improving accessibility
(though currently PDF access is restricted to the campus network).
Easy way to generate the
list: click on this link. This produces
a list of RPI/STS doctoral dissertations sorted on date, from most to
least recent. The interface does not (currently) require an RPI account
OR being connected via the campus network, getting around any potential
difficulties introduced by RPI's predilection for stymying access to
institute resources at every available opportunity. Here is an analogous link for the
master's theses to come out of the department.
Slightly
harder way: go to the Folsom Library OPAC Advanced Keyword
Search page (OPAC is a generic term for Online Public
Access Catalog). Perform a search specifying Thesis
(Ph.D.) in Any
Field and science and technology
studies in the Author
field. This is the manual way of doing the same thing
the link above does.
Even more generally:there are basically two bits of info involved here: first,
the folks at Folsom put the thesis/dissertation advisor's department in
the Added
Author field (this seems to have been done with good
uniformity). Second, they put Thesis
(MS) or Thesis
(Ph.D.) in the Notes field.
However, these flags are not at all formalized or uniformly maintained,
e.g. sometimes it's Dept.
of Science and Technology Studies, other times it's Science and Technology
Studies Dept., sometimes it's M.S., sometimes
MS,
sometimes masters,
etc. The attractive alternative of the Subject: field
(wherein the department can sometimes be found) seems to be even less
uniformly maintained, so (like earlier techniques) this remains an
imperfect solution. Accolades will go to anyone who can pass
along a legit RPI/STS dissertation that does NOT show up under these
searches as specified!
Further, as of this writing RPI's Folsom Library uses WebPAC Pro,
a commercial OPAC produced by Innovative
Interfaces. It's possible that the folks at Folsom
will eventually see the light and realize the sense of using a
free/open source alternative (e.g. Fac-Back-OPAC),
or they may just stick with RPI's modus operandi and decide to switch
to another proprietary product out of feature-fascination,
financial-misdirection, or nepotism. Regardless, while the
catalog data
is likely to retain its format (one would hope), the rules for how to
do a search could change quite
easily, pulling the plug
on both the interface-specific solutions for generating a list that I
give above (at which point someone else will hopefully pass along a fix or notice to myself and/or any new students).
Regardless, once you have the list, bound hardcopies of every item on
that list are kept in the stacks; currently they're in the southwest quandrant (upper left) of the third
floor of Folsom (excepting those not yet returned from UMI).
